Yury Mamleev is one of the great Russian writers of the second half of the 20th century who is frequently labeled by many international critics as the godfather of Russian necrorealism – the local movement that is characterized by a dark sense of humor, a depiction of decay and death, as well as absurdist plot twists. As a cultural movement, necrorealism is not specifically limited by literature as the primary medium – the movement is frequently associated with many artists and filmmakers of the late 20th century as well.
