And just like that, Sex and the City has entered our lives more than 20 years ago and became an iconic, timeless show which inspired thousands of women to dress like its characters. Four iconic women – Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Samantha Jones, and Charlotte York – became the trendsetters who broke any existed fashion rules, brought the brands we now love to the public’s attention, and made women spend thousands of dollars just to recreate the outfit of their favorite character.
From high-low dressing to making every girl in the world become obsessed with a pair of Manolos, the impart of the costume designer Patricia Field on the fashion industry of these two decades was immersive. And whether you admired Carrie’s excentric outfits, Charlotte’s preppy clothes, Samantha’s bold colors and figure-hugging silhouettes, or Miranda’s way-ahead-of-time style, it’s time for us to get ourselves a Cosmopolitan and take a trip down the memory lane to each of the Sex and the City character’s style!
Carrie Bradshaw
The name of Carrie Bradshaw associates with the very definition of fashion – she’s putting clothes before anything else and could pull out literally any possible outfit. In one episode, it was even mentioned that she spent $40,000 on shoes alone, while she didn’t have a place to live. She was the woman who lived in her shoes…
Patricia Field managed to create Carrie’s signature style that cannot be mistaken with anyone else’s now. At that time, Carrie Bradshaw has created the high-low dressing concept – “I need a $5 dress to go with my $500 shoes,” and that’s how we fell in love with her style and fashion combinations.
Her first ever outfit was a tiered tutu with a pale pink tank top paired with strappy sandals. And everything from that tutu to her iconic Fendi baguette bag and a ‘Carrie’ necklace became iconic. As soon as Carrie Bradshaw entered the screen, women worldwide became obsessed with her “naked dress,” the ultimate boyfriend shirt look, the bare waist outfits, and the revenge dress (of course!)
Samantha Jones
Samantha Jones was the one out of four women who radiated power dressing. Anything bold with head-turning colors and prints, exaggerated shoulder pads, and skintight dresses – she wore it all with extreme confidence, and she was always in the center of attention.
This confidence was with her for the whole series, never letting anyone tell her how to dress. Whether it was an oversized straw hat, her flamboyant power suits, a leopard print, or logos, logos, and logos – her clothes made a statement that she owns any room she entered.
Miranda Hobbes
At the time of the series, Miranda Hobbes definitely wasn’t the most fashionable gang member. However, looking back, Miranda could have been the most fashion-forward of the group now.
In the early days of Sex and the City, she loved wearing hoodies, weird sunglasses, dungarees, baseball caps, and a puffer jacket. While it was considered kinda dorky back then, today, many of her outfits could easily fit in a Balenciaga campaign.
A couple of seasons forward, her hoodie addiction grew into something completely different. The successful lawyer Miranda started wearing sharp blazers, printed dresses, and even some bold and colorful pieces. And while her looks were more behind than the others, but she wasn’t ready to comply with the norms.
Charlotte York
Charlotte York channeled feminine through her well-known preppy wardrobe, full of classic silhouettes, neatly tailored dresses, polka-dot outfits, and timeless accessories. She definitely knows what works on her body and wears only what she likes. And while most people considered Charlotte boring, this was an incorrect statement.
Anything from Prada, Oscar de la Renta, and Ralph Lauren – she wore feminine dresses and tailored jackets impeccably. And finishing everything with a pair of pearl earrings, nice shoes, and sunglasses – ahh, absolute perfection!
Classic silhouettes, clean lines, and an elegant court shoe – her ladylike style is easily recognizable and loved worldwide.

And just like that, Sex and the City was and still is considered one of the most fashionable TV shows of all times, thanks to Patricia Field. And no matter which character you prefer the most, Sex and the City looks of four successful women are considered iconic.
