The nineteenth century in Russia was quite productive from the artistic point of view, despite the social circumstances in which artists were forced to live. The Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg controlled the Russian school of painting and sculpture. However, not every artist shared the views of the Academy and resigned to form the “Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions” or simply “Peredvizhniki.”
