Volker Shlondorff is one of the brightest representatives of the New German Cinema along with such recognized masters as Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Wim Wenders. On the international scale, Shlondorff is mostly known for his Academy Award picture, The Tin Drum, based on a cult novel by Gunter Grass.
